Bluebottle


Continuing on with the beach theme, today there's a bluebottle (Physalia species), which is also called a Portuguese Man o'War. I think they make great photographic subjects.

They often litter our beach, especially in summer when a north-easter is blowing. Dad remembers seeing rafts of them when he was a kid, floating on the water surface, but I only ever see them on the sand - as someone with allergies to bee stings, I keep away from bluebottles! Even when washed up on the beach, the tentacles can still sting.

NOTE: Oh, this wasn't a good choice of photo for this week, with the Australian Geographic winning nature photo being also a bluebottle! Have a look at this photo ... which makes mine pale into insignificance! I'd love to get a shot like this one:
