Seven Mile Beach stretches forever in a gentle sweep of a bay on the south coast of NSW (Note: there are many other beaches with the same name!). At the northern end is the township of Gerroa, in the middle is the township of Shoalhaven Heads, and that's all that's there, people-wise. There's national park between Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads, and Comerong Island lies to the south.
Comerong Island, now, is not often an island. The Shoalhaven River used to run into the ocean on the northern and southern sides of the island, and then the river opening was widened and a breakwall made on the southern side of the island. When this happened, the northern outlet of the river sanded closed. It now only opens during floods.
The most recent opening was in 2013. It lasted about 8 months before closing completely. It had been about 25 years since it had opened.
I've been taking a pictorial record of the opened section of the beach, walking down and taking photos about every fortnight. One day I'll get some together to show the changes. It was quite phenomenal to watch the changes along the beach.
And yes, I live quite close to this beautiful spot.
