Tink turned up in my life a few months after Ellie. She'd been thrown over the fence of the dog kennels and they'd rescued her. When I dropped Ellie off for a weekend visit, there was a scrawny kelpie with the largest ears I'd ever seen timidly minding the desk. Cheryl asked if I wanted another dog. I didn't but one look at those eyes and those ears and I heard myself saying, "If Ellie likes her and wants her, then it's fine." When I came to pick up Ellie, Tink came home with us.
She wasn't an easy dog to know, she kept to herself and never trusted being in a car. It's awful that the mis-treatment of the first few months of a dog's life can affect them forever more. She may not have been easy to know, but she was easy to live with, easy to love and easy to care for.
For the last few years she had epilepsy and diabetes. She'd suffered a few pancreatitis events. And through it all, she wagged her tail, went on walks, ate and was happy. I wish I was that good a patient.
She suffered awfully when Ellie died but she stayed with us a few more months. On Sat 13th, we had to let her go. The vet suspected a stomach tumour and a bladder tumour.
My two best friends have left me... but my life is so much richer for having known them both.
Take care my friend, I hope Ellie was there to meet you.
