A Fine Balance

I belong to a Book Club which I love. We read fascinating stories that I would not often find, and the discussions stimulated by these books is far ranging and eye-opening. I often have a different opinion to the others, but my opinion is always respected and often I leave with a greater appreciation of the story I just read.

I missed book Group last week because I hadn't finished the book. Usually this wouldn't bother me (or I'd plough through and make sure I did finish) but not this time. And I am so glad. Last night I finished the book and I would have been so upset if I hadn't read the end before the discussion.

The book is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, and it's a masterpiece. I wish I could write something like this. It's beautiful, horrible, real, thought-provoking, gosh, I can't do justice trying to describe it. It's a most beautiful read (even if some of the content is awful). It's set in India, and not with the rich but with the poor. It's a tale of so many things but foremost in my mind is resilience.

The biggest questions in my mind (probably because it plays around in my mind anyway) is why do some people have a lot of resilience to whatever horrid things life throws at them, while others have little resilience? And why do some people have every horrible thing happen, when others have little?

I'm sorry I missed the Book Group discussion because it would have been an incredible one. But I'm glad I worked my way through this amazing book at my own pace.
